March 2008 - Leighton Artist Colony, Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta
We based ourselves in our studio in the woods and filled two weeks with research for a body of work we have given the working title, 'Women Rock'. Dr Jennifer Salahub spoke to us about different ways to carry out research then led us through the Whyte Museum pointing out possible avenues of study. Professional photographer Willie Schmidt showed us a sampling of his art work and gave us pointers on how to make the most of our photographic opportunities. Margaret Anne Knowles, a museum curator who has specialised in historic photographs, led us through many group development exercises. We had a training session with archivists at the Whyte Museum Archives and members continued their research at the archives throughout the residency. Glaciologist Tara Moran and environmentalist Ben Gadd gave us slide show talks in the evenings, with Ben leading us on a nature walk the next day. Dr Peter MacKay, structural geology professor at University of Calgary, took us on a day field trip so we could understand how the Rockies formed. Interspersed with this packed schedule was attendances at many concerts, exhibitions, and happenings going on all over the campus.
